It is situated on a promontory named Promontorio Scillèo, stretched out on the Straits of Messina. One of the main activities to which the population was devoted, until a few years ago, was fishing. Among the various types of fishing, above all, the "hunting" at the Pescespada (traditional fishing) first conducted, until the 1950s, with the otters, a special rowing boat, and then with the catwalk, a special motor boat with a long walkway To the bow and a high central antenna, called the falere, which serves to detect the presence of the fish.

Tourism is on the rise, thanks to the beauty of the sea, the beaches, the natural beauties and the many architectural works. Scilla also has a marina that serves as a haven for the whole Costa Viola and is a tourist and fishing boat. It rises below the cliff from which stands the "Ruffo" castle just at the northern entrance of the Strait of Messina.
